The Heart Behind the Red, White and Blue

Happy 4th

This week, something unexpected reminded me what Independence Day is really about.

It started with a simple gesture. A few days before the Fourth of July, I placed small American flags on lawns throughout the neighborhood. Nothing fancy — just a quiet way to celebrate, show pride, and bring a little color to our streets.

But then I received a phone call that stopped me in my tracks.

A neighbor I had never met called to thank me. His voice was full of emotion as he said how much it meant to him that someone placed a flag in his yard. Then he shared why.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War. And not just anywhere — he served alongside Jesse Brown, the legendary naval aviator whose story was portrayed in the film Devotion. As he spoke, he told me about the hardships and trauma of that time. About memories that still linger. And about the pride he still carries for this country and those he served with.

I could hear it in his voice — the depth, the emotion, the gratitude.

He shared a bit about his family too, including his daughter, who has built a big name for herself in our city. The pride in his voice when he spoke of her was unmistakable.

What struck me most was how much this small gesture — placing a flag in his yard — filled his heart. It reminded him that he’s seen. That he’s remembered. That the spirit of this holiday is still alive.

As we hung up, I thanked him for his service and told him I’d love to stop by in person sometime. And I will. With my homemade sourdough in hand — my love language.

This experience moved me deeply. It reminded me that the Fourth of July isn’t just about fireworks or long weekends. It’s about freedom. Connection. And the meaningful ways we show up for one another.

That’s the heart behind the red, white and blue.

Happy Independence Day 🇺🇸
